Remember That ‘No Zoos’ Pledge in the Stimulus? Yeah, Nevermind

ProPublica: “The economic stimulus law explicitly bans state and local governments from spending stimulus money on zoos. But it makes no mention of the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.”

The exact language was, “None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available in this act may be used by any state or local government, or any private entity, for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, or swimming pool.” Obama mentioned it in his memo on stimulus funding.

But apparently the Smithsonian doesn’t qualify as “state or local government, or any private entity,” which is why they can spend $11.4 million on the National Zoo.
