Russert asks Romney how he would run against both Clintons.
“The idea of Bill Clinton in the White House with nothing to do is something I can’t imagine, and I can’t imagine that the American people can imagine that…” Dang, he stepped on the line. There was room for a subtle Bill-the-philanderer joke there, and he missed it.
“Sending the same people to Washington and expecting a different result is not going to get America back on track.” I thought he was going to go with the “is the definition of insanity” line.
Russert starts hassling Romney about how much he’s spent on the race. Romney says he’ll file by the deadline like everyone else, and that he’s raised more than anybody else on stage. He says he’s contributed less than Jon Corzine and Mike Bloomberg.
He says that no one has put more into his campaign than he has, and nobody can come to him and say, “you owe me.”
A good answer.
Maybe this is what Russert said was shocking when his mike was left on — Williams cites a soon-to-be released MSNBC poll: “Forty-four precent of respondents say a Mormon president would have a hard time uniting the country.”
Romney says he doesn’t believe Americans will pick their president based on religion.
Huckabee makes a joke about saving the Romney sons’ inheritance. Romney forces a smile. I think there’s something a little rude about making that joke to Romney’s face.
