The Campaign Spot

Sam Brownback at the Family Research Council Summit

Senator Sam Brownback, rumored to be departing the race later today, has now taken the stage. He begins by remembering the leaders of the religious conservative community who have passed on recently, and talks about how their fight goes on. He may not be deliberately evoking Ted Kennedy’s “the dream will never die” speech, but his opening comments certainly reminded me of it.
“Right now, if you’re on public assistance, if you get married you can lose up to 88 percent of your benefits. You should be getting a bonus for getting married, not punished.”
Can that statement possibly be true? And if so, why isn’t every candidate putting that in every stump speech?
