If I’m reading lips correctly, the first words of Law & Order star Sam Waterston upon sitting down at the head table at the National Press Club were, “Ooh, cake!”

Waterston is speaking in about five minutes on behalf of Unity 08, an organization trying to put together a “bipartisan” independent bid for president in 2008. (They would like to nominate a ticket consisting of one Democrat and one Republican, or one member of the two major parties and an independent.)
