The Campaign Spot

Some Men Weren’t Born To Be Vice President

It’s easy to think that in retrospect, Sarah Palin was the only choice McCain could have made. But right now Tom Ridge is speaking, and it’s striking to think how much buzz surrounded him such a short while ago. He’s speaking tonight, and while the writing of the speech is fine, and the delivery seems… well, it seems like Ridge is trying to be charismatic and fired-up. But the crowd is just not responding with any pep or vigor. Ridge seems like a solid, responsible man, but I think it’s safe to say he would have been a politically disastrous pick as McCain’s running mate.
Ridge is trying hard, even telling the crowd, “Say it with me! That’s John McCain!” And he claps along. It’s a valient effort, but this arena isn’t ready to rock, not quite yet.
