Once again, I feel compelled to step in between two candidates I like and declare one attack a bit below the belt. Fred Thompson, speaking on Laura Ingraham’s show, said:
“He said if you come here and work hard, and you happen in undocumented status, you’re one of the people that we want in this city, you’re somebody that we want to protect,” Thompson said. “So that pretty much gives you his thoughts on it. I don’t think he’s moved away from it to tell you the truth. He teamed up, apparently with MoveOn.org, under George Soros to oppose the anti-immigration forces, so-called, so I’m not sure what he would say about the future.”
Well, the connection to Soros was that he was appointed to an “Immigration Coalition” that Giuliani created in 1997, aimed at “mounting a public education campaign to the vital contributions immigrants make to our nation and to overturn recently enacted federal anti-immigrant legislation and policies.” (I think I was among the first to call attention to it.) MoveOn.org was formed in 1998 in response to Bill Clinton’s impeachment.
So while Giuliani does have this (small) connection to Soros from back then, he doesn’t have a connection with MoveOn.org.
UPDATE: A bit more on Giuliani’s coalition – apparently it was first discussed in October 1996, and Giuliani mentioned in a speech the individuals collected: “Today I am also announcing that my office will be working with a coalition of well-known individuals and organizations who oppose the anti-immigration forces now being seen in Washington and elsewhere… Among the members of this coalition will be….(skipping the first few) George Soros, international financier and founder of the “Emma Lazarus Fund,” which assists legal immigrants.”
Lucky for Giuliani he didn’t say something like, “this great man, George Soros”…
