Twilight of the Red-District Democrats

If Chet Edwards is trailing in Texas, then a whole bunch of incumbent House Democrats in traditionally red districts are probably going down.

And you know who is now saying that Chet Edwards is trailing?

Chet Edwards.

U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards admitted today that he trails in his bid for an 11th term — only a month out from Election Day.

“I’m the underdog,” the Waco Democrat told the editorial board of The Dallas Morning News . . .

The blunt self-analysis comes after several political handicappers have soured on Edwards’ prospects of hanging on to his conservative Central Texas district — a seat long coveted by Republicans.

His GOP opponent in the Nov. 2 election is Bill Flores, a retired energy executive and political newcomer from Bryan.

If Edwards goes down, I’ll bet you see a bunch of longtime Blue Dogs go down, too. The first names that come to mind that fit this profile are John Spratt in South Carolina, Jim Marshall and John Barrow in Georgia, Gene Taylor in Mississippi, Lincoln Davis in Tennessee, Earl Pomeroy in North Dakota, Ike Skelton in Missouri, Rick Boucher in Virginia . . . perhaps even Mike Ross in Arkansas, Jim Matheson in Utah, or Dan Boren in Oklahoma.
