The Campaign Spot

Two Big, If Unconfirmed, Headlines From the Brits: Gore’s Running, and Al-Qaeda Planning attack on “a Par with Hiroshima and Nagasaki”

I’m a little skeptical of scoops from British papers, even though I love reading the London Telegraph. But they’re reporting that Al Gore’s friends are now getting together and secretly plotting a campaign for the White House.
Of course, the headline and first paragraph are pretty clear, but then the quotes elsewhere in the story seem a little less definitive. “He hasn’t asked them to do this, but nor has he told them not to.”
Of course, while we’re looking at shocking headlines in British newspapers, we should note that the Sunday Times has gotten its hands on an ominous warning from the UK’s Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) – based at MI5’s London headquarters:

The report continues: “Recent reporting has described AQI’s [al-Qaeda in Iraq]Kurdish network in Iran planning what we believe may be a large-scale attack against a western target.
“A member of this network is reportedly involved in an operation which he believes requires AQ Core authorisation. He claims the operation will be on ‘a par with Hiroshima and Naga-saki’ and will ‘shake the Roman throne’. We assess that this operation is most likely to be a large-scale, mass casualty attack against the West.”
The report says there is “no indication” this attack would specifically target Britain, “although we are aware that AQI . . . networks are active in the UK”.

For whatever it’s worth…
