The Campaign Spot

Two Pop Culture Precursors of Obamamania

If you think the talk about “hope,” “change” and “yes we can” is a description of a campaign about nothing, this fits:

Barack Obama, and his supporters: “We are the ones we have been waiting for.”
From the Seinfeld episode, “The Invitations“:

Jerry: Now I know what I’ve been looking for all these years……myself! I’ve been waiting for me to come along and now I’ve swept myself off my feet.

And this one is a bit more obscure, but I figure it will make four readers out there double over with laughter. After hearing Obama described as, “…almost like a…revival…for a lot of people’s souls,” in his latest celebrity endorsement video, as we hear endless rhythmic chanting of the candidate’s last name, I feel like I’ve heard this before. I keep waiting for glowing-eyed pale missionaries carrying staffs to start appearing, chanting,

“Hallowed are the Obami.”
“Hallowed are the children of the Obami.”
“Hallowed are we; hallowed are the Obami.”
“The Obami need nothing from us.”
“Is great knowledge, power, understanding not enough for you to revere the Obami?”
“The power and the greatness of the Obami cannot be denied.”
“It is the will of the Obami, that we should spread Obami-nation to all those blessed by their creation.”
“Fear not the Obami, fear the darkness that would conceal the knowledge of the universe. Believe in the truth of all things, and you too may find the path to enlightenment.”

Like I said, about four readers who watched the alien cult on Stargate will laugh.
