The Wilson Resolution, All That Stands Between Us and the Klan Conquering America

Yes, this is a way to win over skeptics: “In an obvious reference to the Ku Klux Klan, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., said Tuesday that people will put on “white hoods and ride through the countryside” if emerging racist attitudes, which he says were subtly supported by Wilson, are not rebuked.”

UPDATE: This, in a nutshell, is how our political system has become an endless cycle of “can you believe this person said/did this?”

On paper, folks on both sides of the aisle ought to be able to agree that no matter how much you disagree with a president, yelling “you lie!” is a breach of decorum and ought to be avoided. Wilson apologized, which was appropriate, and Obama accepted, which was appropriate. Late last week, Obama, Wilson, and Pelosi all said the matter was settled and that it was time to move on.

Somehow, over the weekend, the Democrats in the House determined that Wilson’s misdeed was less to Obama than to them, and that they had to make as big a deal out of this as possible. And now, to build support of a resolution denouncing outrageous statement, House Democrats are making outrageous statements of their own.

The vote on the resolution is scheduled around 3 p.m.
