9 Shot in Chicago on the Same Day as Urban Violence Summit

At least nine shot. . .

The two people shot were among at least nine wounded in attacks across the city Friday into Saturday morning.

A 17-year-old boy was wounded late Friday morning in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side. About 11:40 a.m., the victim was found wounded on the 2400 block of East 75th Street, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada. The boy suffered wounds to his buttocks and legs and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where his condition had been stabilized, Estrada said. There was no immediate information about the circumstances leading up to the shooting and area Central Detectives were investigating.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday addressed a national summit that the Congressional Black Caucus is holding in Chicago on urban violence.

The mayor said sensible gun laws, youth jobs and safe havens for children are needed. Emanuel says policing, prevention, parenting and gun penalties would help.

The wide-ranging gathering of lawmakers, academics, law enforcement experts and the public is at Chicago State University on the city’s South Side. It followed a violent night in Chicago that saw six people shot, including a woman in the Austin neighborhood who was wounded in a drive-by involving a shotgun.
