Breaking: Box Blows Up At FedEx Office

SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego police say a package containing wires and batteries has exploded at a FedEx office but nobody was injured.

The explosion occurred shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday in a strip mall in the Sorrento Valley neighborhood.

Lt. Dan Christman says employees sorting boxes were about 6 feet from the cardboard box when it exploded. The workers reported there was a flash and a smell like gunpowder.

Christman says batteries and wires were seen inside the box.

The building was evacuated and a police bomb squad was called in.

It’s not immediately clear whether the explosion was deliberate but police say there had been no reports of any threats to the building.

A message left with a FedEx spokesperson was not immediately returned.
