Rahm: I am a Chicago Resident Because it was like I was in the Army

We’ve asked Chicagoans to “Tell it Like It Is,” bluntly, Chicago style. And we’ve pledged an equally straight-forward campaign in return. Thanks to the thousands of Chicagoans who have responded.

Some of you have asked about news stories featuring a lawyer who questions Rahm’s residency qualifications. Important facts have been missed or buried in the coverage of this issue, so we wanted to make sure you know the truth.

1. Rahm was born in Chicago, his kids were born in Chicago, and he represented Chicago in the Congress until he left Congress to work at the White House. He owns a home in Chicago, pays property taxes in Chicago, votes in Chicago and has a drivers license in Chicago. Rahm is a resident of Chicago and is completely qualified to run for Mayor in 2011.

2. The Chicago Board of Elections has provided some insight on how they view questions of residency: “’Generally, if a candidate leaves the state for work yet retains ownership of a city property, maintains his voter registration and continues to vote absentee, he should not have a problem,’ according to Jim Allen, a spokesman for the Chicago Board of Elections.” (you can see the whole story in the Trib by clicking here)
