Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday accepted a Russian proposal to put his country’s chemical weapons arsenal under international control.
Iran and China immediately backed the 11th hour proposal, which comes as President Obama and Congress continue to struggle with how to respond to the Syrian government’s deadly gas attack on civilians.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Tuesday after meeting with Russian officials that his government quickly “agreed to the Russian initiative,” adding that Syria cooperated to “uproot U.S. aggression.”
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday that Russia is now working with Syria to prepare a detailed plan of action, which will be presented shortly. . .
