Wala-Mart Practices are ‘Worse Than Slavery’

 Lucia Delaroca wasn’t one of the thousands of New Jerseyans who turned out this morning to begin holiday shopping.

Instead, Delaroca stood on the side of North Main Street in Manville and shouted into a microphone to protest the working conditions at Wal-Mart stores, where she said the retail giant is making tremendous profits without paying their employees enough to live.

“It’s worse than slavery,” Delaroca, a resident of Dunellen in Middlesex County, later said in an interview. “They’re being used for their labor and they’re not being paid enough to live…in the world that we live in now.

The event – made up of roughly 10 protesters near the Wal-Mart store on North Main Street in Manville – was one of the hundreds of demonstrations planned across the country to protest the Arkansas-based company. The protests have been sponsored by “OUR Walmart,” a group of current and former Wal-Mart employees. . .
