The House passed a three-week continuing resolution Tuesday that keeps the government running through April 8 and cuts federal spending by $6 billion. The final vote was 271-158, a significantly tighter margin than on the previous short-term resolution, which passed 335-91. Members of both parties have indicated that this should be the last short-term resolution — that the next measure passed should be a bill that funds the government through the end of the fiscal year (September 30).
In the end, 54 Republicans voted against the bill, with 85 Democrats voting for it. Ultimately, the GOP could not have passed the bill without significant support from across the aisle. Only six Republicans voted against the previous short-term spending bill.
The bill now moves to the Senate, where Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) has said it will also pass, even though a number of prominent Republicans have come out against the short-term measure.
