John, years of mandatory attendance at (very traditional) school chapels left me with no faith, but a fondness for (very traditional) hymns. My rule (and there are many exceptions, notably the Battle Hymn of the Republic) used to be that hymns about “God” tended to be more entertaining than those that referred to “the Lord”. “Smiting” was also a good sign.
