OK, the comparison is a bit stretched, but a Dan, a reader in New York points out these unacceptably divisive lines from a Churchill speech in June 1940:
“Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation.”
What would the New York Times have said? Churchill, incidentally, was essentially an agnostic, but he understood the positive role that organized religion could play in society. As he once said about the Church of England:
“I could hardly be called a pillar of the Church, I am more in the nature of a buttress, for I support it from the outside”.
