The China Syndrome

Mark, it’s worth remembering that, whatever natalists may claim, falling populations are far from incompatible with prosperity. The key, economically speaking, is how the transition  to a lower population is managed. Mass immigration is not the answer, working a little longer is. Whether people have the will to do that is an entirely different question. Meanwhile, those who continue to insist, against all the evidence, that falling birthrates in Europe are the result of some profound spiritual malaise would do well to look at the data you cite from Vietnam, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
