Communalism in Bradford

From the Daily Mail, October 2 2015:

An Asian family who converted to Christianity claim they are being driven out of their home for the second time by Muslim persecutors. Nissar Hussain, his wife Kubra and their six children said they have suffered an appalling ordeal at the hands of neighbours who regard them as blasphemers. They claim they are effectively prisoners in their own home after being attacked in the street, having their car windscreens repeatedly smashed and eggs thrown at their windows….

Police have been called numerous times to deal with the trouble but are said to be reluctant to treat the problem as a religious hate crime. Only one successful prosecution has been made, and Mr Hussain said he feels so let down by police he has lodged a complaint with the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

He also criticised the Anglican Church for failing to provide any meaningful support.

Now the family are likely to move from their home city of Bradford [a city in the North of England where the Muslim population is roughly 25 percent of the total] to a ‘white English’ area to escape the hate campaign. ‘Our lives have been sabotaged and this shouldn’t happen in the United Kingdom,’ said Mr Hussain.

’We live in a free democratic society and what they are doing to us is abhorrent.’

The Daily Mail first reported the family’s ordeal in 2005 when they accused Muslims of a campaign of ethnic cleansing against them. A year later they moved to a different part of Bradford to start again. Neighbours welcomed them into the community and all was well until Mr Hussain took part in a Channel 4 Dispatches TV documentary about the mistreatment of Muslim converts, which was screened in 2008.

…Although their faith remains strong, Mr and Mrs Hussain no longer attend church. ‘We have given up on the Church of England, they have done nothing for us,’ said Mr Hussain….

The (in) action of the police says a great deal, as does that of the Church of England, an institution that, like others on the British left, clearly finds some kinds of intolerance more equal than others.

And this failure to support the Hussain family has had the inevitable appalling consequences.

The Yorkshire Post, November 19, 2015:

A FATHER-of-six was attacked by hooded thugs with a pickaxe handle outside his Bradford home because he converted from Islam to Christianity. Nissar Hussain, 49, suffered a broken kneecap, a fractured forearm and a concussion in the attack on Tuesday. He is currently in Bradford Royal Infirmary following surgery after the unprovoked assault outside his home in Manningham.

The episode was caught on Mr Hussain’s home CCTV and is being reviewed by West Yorkshire Police, who have confirmed they are treating it as a religious hate crime. Mr Hussain went outside at around 5pm to move his car outside Lawcroft House Police Station, which he has been forced to do after his vehicle has been damaged over six times in a year….

I commented the other day on a new report by Britain’s Institute of Fiscal Studies arguing that the incentive of a minority to integrate (which should not, I would stress, necessarily involve leaving the faith of one’s ancestors, but merely the acceptance of the right to do so) diminishes with an increase in the size of that minority relative to the overall population.

Here’s an extract from the IFS report:

When the minority (immigrant) group is small relative to the majority, assimilation occurs. Multiculturalism and [self-]segregation [occur] only once the share of the minority group in the population exceeds particular (different) thresholds. Above a certain threshold, there is a large enough `critical mass’ of immigrants that if the group maintains its distinct culture then, for any immigrant, the cost of switching culture outweighs the benefits of increased interaction. This threshold result is due to complementarities: maintaining a distinct minority culture is only `worth it’ if others do so, therefore either no one maintains the immigrant culture or a large group of immigrants does.

And the existence of a cadre of enforcers prepared to threaten (or worse) members of that minority who wish to distance themselves from aspects of their traditional culture makes matters even worse still.

And as for the unwillingness to help such dissenters, well…
