John, I don’t know whether there’s truth to the claim that Bush’s campaigning backfired or not, but Tom Bevan’s arguments don’t snuff that claim out. What they do show, as Bevan himself says, is that “it’s impossible to say how much Bush’s last-minute visits had to do with the outcome in either of either [the Montana or Missouri] races” but that’s not the same thing at all. The jury’s still out, I would say.
