John, I suppose that a broken clock can be right twice a day, but one of the iron rules of understanding the British press is that anything that Madeleine Bunting writes has to be taken with a very large pinch of salt indeed. Having read her piece, which is as usual, a tawdry farrago of anecdote, prejudice and muddle, that iron rule, quite clearly, still stands.
