Are the Eastern Europeans having doubts about the EU? There’s an interesting article on this topic in today’s London Observer by Czech journalist, Jana Ciglerova. She’s pro-EU herself, but read the piece for the real – and realistic – fears it reveals. It’s also fascinating to discover that the one country where anti-EU support is now ahead in the opinion polls is Estonia. Some of the reasons for this are historical and cultural, but Ciglerova doesn’t do enough justice to a third aspect of Estonian skepticism over the Brussels project. To make itself acceptable to the EU, Estonia (a country with a flat income tax and, I believe, no taxation of corporate profits) is actually having to deliberalize its economy.
Ridiculous.
