Shinya Yamanaka, the inventor of the induced pluripotent stem cell, has won the Nobel Prize. IPSCs are made by taking a skin cell (say) and “reprogramming” it into an embryonic-like pluripotent stem cell. They are already being used for drug testing and disease modeling from specific patients–something that biotechnologists once said would require human cloning to accomplish.
