Florida House Passes the Parental Rights in Education Bill

Florida’s House of Representatives passed the Parental Rights in Education bill yesterday. The legislation, if passed in the state’s Republican-majority Senate, would “prohibit discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in certain grade levels or in a specified manner.” [Emphasis added.] Meaning,

Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.

Activists are claiming that this amounts to a “Don’t Say Gay” bill, a vicious attack on LGBT Americans. President Biden, meanwhile, has called it “hateful.” Earlier this week, I wrote a piece explaining how the bill is really an attempt to improve school transparency and protect parental rights.
