Free Trade?

One of the reasons that many people (including myself) supported the EU was the idea that it would accelerate the global push for free trade. And (with the glaring exception of agriculture) for a long time it was indeed a force for good in this area. That’s decreasingly true these days, as can be seen from this new initiative apparently being discussed in Brussels.

“Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy is said to be pondering plans which could see governments able to veto imports which do not meet individual societies’ “collective preferences”.
