Health Care: Doing Nothing Is Not a (Realistic) Option

Scott Brown’s victory is a delight, but Jim Manzi is spot on when he writes (of the health-care system) that “reform is required” and then, wisely, goes on to suggest that that reform process should be “iterative.” Obamacare is not the way to go, but from the problems of pre-existing conditions, to those of the unemployed (including those for whom COBRA does not apply because their company has gone bust) or the hardworking (involuntarly) uninsured, to the malign effect of the tort bar, to restrictions on interstate insurance, well, the list of the health-care system’s woes is endless, and potentially very expensive (two good arguments for an incremental approach), but these are not issues that can be ignored indefinitely.
