Jonah, Malthus, we should not forget, was a parson. We should also remember that one of his more prominent fans was another clergyman, one William Paley, author of the book, Natural Theology (1802), a book best known for its lucid exposition of what some now call ‘intelligent design’. Ooops. The best thing about history, I sometimes think, is how awkward it is.
