McCain’s Veep

Jonah, I have to confess that I’m not exactly convinced (to put it mildly) by the idea that John McCain should pick a Democrat as his running mate, but I’m absolutely certain that opting for either Joe Lieberman or Sam Nunn would cost votes, not attract them. Obama is running as the candidate of “change”, something that is likely to play very well in November. For McCain to pick either Nunn or Lieberman would only help Obama in those efforts. McCain might believe that it might make a fine bipartisan gesture, but the reality is that their partnership would come across like the last stand of a cozy, ageing establishment. And so it would prove to be.
