Many of the major Democrats in Kentucky politics have distanced themselves from Progress Kentucky, the super PAC that has recently come under fire for racially charged tweets directed at Senator McConnell’s wife, former labor secretary Elaine Chao. Although the national narrative has focused on whether the actress Ashley Judd will run for the seat, the more likely and more viable candidate is Kentucky’s secretary of state, Alison Lundergan Grimes.
While Ashley Judd quickly distanced herself from Project Kentucky, Secretary Grimes has yet to rebuke the liberal super PAC. Kentucky political observers have hypothesized that she’s trying to avoid commenting on the situation in order to gain Project Kentucky’s support for the election.
