Part of what vexes Democrats so much about Texas senator Ted Cruz is that he’s conservative despite having graduated from Ivy Leagues schools, according to MSNBC host Karen Finney. She described him as a “craven politician” and “sly” for using his abilities to rally around conservative causes.

“He is actually using our own liberal doctrine against us,” Finney said on Thursday. “Because we’re all sitting here saying, ‘Well, he went to Harvard, and he went to Princeton — he’s got all these credentials, how could he be crazy?’”

This isn’t the first time MSNBC contributors have remarked on Cruz’s educational background: Earlier this summer, Ed Rendell said, “Princeton and Harvard should be disgraced” for calling the Texas senator an alum.

Finney went on to accuse Cruz of “bastardizing and distorting the Constitution” for standing in opposition to several initiatives from Senate Democrats. “The Constitution says, ‘This is how our government works, this is how we work together,’ and he’s not for any of that,” she said. Most recently, Cruz has been on the forefront of opposing funding for Obamacare in upcoming budget negotiations.
