Mark, you are of course quite right that immigration is a hugely significant contributor to the increase in population so hymned by David Brooks. As I believe you may know, I think that permitting immigration into the U.S. on the current scale is a serious mistake. Nevertheless, Brooks was at pains to mention America’s higher fertility rates in the course of his article, so I thought it worth noting that this, too, was not necessarily a cause for celebration.
