Iain, like you, I agree that that’s certainly an interesting article by PJ O’Rourke, and like you I was intrigued by the piece that you extracted, in particular this:

What will destroy our country and us is not the financial crisis but the fact that liberals think the free market is some kind of sect or cult, which conservatives have asked Americans to take on faith. That’s not what the free market is. The free market is just a measurement, a device to tell us what people are willing to pay for any given thing at any given moment.

True enough, of course, but it’s not only liberals that have been behaving as if the free market is some sort of cult. If there was one thing that struck me about the GOP House revolt over TARP (however flawed TARP may originally have been), it was the language of that revolt, a dim-witted howl of half understood market theory. It sounded pretty cultish to me.
