Jonah, I’m broadly in agreement with you on the idea that social stigma can have a useful role to play, and (as I suspect you would think) that that is a role that is now all too often filled by the state. The problem, of course, lies in what you choose to stigmatize. You say that some libertarians are uncomfortable with condemning “indecent” behavior, and, perhaps that’s true. In saying that, however, be careful not to make the assumption that those libertarians share your definition as to what is, or is not, “indecent”.
