Not perhaps a headline that gets you rushing to read, nevertheless the win by the center-’right’ in Sweden’s elections is also likely to be seen as a boost for David Cameron’s brand of conservatism in the UK. Fredrik Reinfeldt, the young leader of the Sweden’s conservatives (known, depressingly, as the Moderates), the largest party in the victorious four-party opposition coalition, had rebranded his party as the ‘new’ Moderates and moved its policies some way to the left. The result was to give the party its highest percentage of the votes (26 per cent or so) since, I think,1928. Overall, the victorious coalition will have 178 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag.
