Representative Fred Upton (R., Mich.) announced on the House floor Tuesday that he will retire from Congress after three decades spent representing his Michigan district.
At 68 years old, Upton has served in the House for over 30 years and was one of only ten House Republicans who voted to impeach President Trump in his second impeachment.
Upton urged the country to accept the results of the 2020 election and move forward, splitting with the Trump camp. The Michigan congressman voted to impeach Trump at the end of his term for “incitement of insurrection” over his role in the January 6 riot.
Given the way the political landscape has evolved since 2020, with the GOP gearing up for a midterm sweep in 2022, Upton was due to face an arduous primary contest against a suite of more populist challengers.
Representative Debbie Dingell (D., Mich.) celebrated Upton’s service on the House floor after his announcement.
“His retiring is a loss for this country and especially the people of Michigan,” Dingell said.
